The Artist

Ludmila Christeseva is a Swedish artist born in Belarus and based in NYC and in Stockholm. L. Christeseva received her master’s degree in arts and fashion design in Vitebsk (Belarus), known as a hotspot for the period in the art history shaped by some of the most revolutionary minds of the Russian avant-garde, including Vassily Kandinsky, El Lissitzky, Ivan Pouni, Kazimir Malevich, and Marc Chagall.  Their legacies became the launching pad for L. Christeseva´s professional career.  She also holds degrees from Stockholm University and The University College of Arts, Crafts and Design (Konstfack, Sweden). 

Her early work for famous Swedish couturiers resulted into a unique art collection with toiles which are prototypes versions of fashion designs. L.Christeseva has exhibited internationally and showcased her exhibition Sustainidentity on gender identity in the museums of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and other post-Soviet countries together with Swedish Embassies. 

In 2016, L.Christeseva presented her art project War’s Unwomanly Face, based on the book of Nobel’s prize winner Svetlana Alexievich in the Swedish Museum of Army. A series of sculptures by L. Christeseva became a unique scenography for the performance of Margaret Jenkins Dance Company (USA) in Stockholm in 2016.

L.Christeseva is an art director and executive producer for the international exhibition Ingmar Bergman and his legacy in fashion and art, which was shown in more than 60 countries together with the Swedish embassies around the world during 2018. On July 14, 2018, L. Christeseva was invited to show her installation with the toiles in the context of the harsh and unique nature of Fårö as part of the worldwide celebration of Ingmar Bergman’s 100-year jubilee.

In 2018, L.Christeseva launched HeForShe Arts Week in Stockholm, Sweden for UN Women and Nordic museum, Dance Museum, Hallwylska and many other cultural institutions became a part of the global festival for gender equality. L.Christeseva’s art space Artten Gallery featured a collaborative project between Iranian and Swedish female artists Artdom developed by the UN Goodwill Ambassador to Sweden Arghavan Agida. Since then, L.Christeseva is an invited artist to an international female art movement Artdom by Arghavan Agida. Together, the women unite female talents into a powerful chorus for freedom and peace. Their recent exhibition at Sergelstorgs Konsthall in 2021 in Stockholm featured an installation with canvases and toiles. It was selected by co-founder of Fotografiska Jan Broman and Sweden’s leading property company Vasakronan, and inaugurated by the Swedish Minister of Culture Amanda Lind (2021). 

L.Christeseva’s works are in various private and public collections, including The Swedish Embassies around the world. Her iconic painting  The Sky over is included in an art collection of the leader of the Belarusian democratic movement Svetlana Tikhanovskya. Her artist book “The Sky over” is available for the public in the Swedish Royal Library. The Swedish housing company Stockholmshem commissioned L.Christeseva for an important art project in 2012 and since then thousands of Swedes enjoy L.Christeseva’s art entering their homes.

In 2019, given an empowering heritage of pride, momentum and purpose that honors the example of women’s suffrage set 100 years ago, L. Christeseva organized a fashion show on Stockholm’s streets bringing together a select number of Stockholm locals to participate and thereby support women who are on the way towards their creative dreams—facing both challenges and successes. One of the models was Christina Johannesson, the Swedish ambassador to Belarus. Since 2020, L. Christeseva actively supports the democratic movement in Belarus. 

Crafts that unite, heal, and last is a global textile movement initiated by L. Christeseva in spring 2022 as an artistic and curatorial response to the war in Ukraine. Through joint weaving, people unite for creativity, hope and optimism. The Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ann Linde has participated in one of L.Christeseva’s textile workshops during her exhibition at the Swedish Museum of Army on May 2022.

L. Christeseva runs an exhibition space Artten in the central Stockholm and produces works for Stockholm´s municipality. The gallery offers a unique opportunity for artists to share their artistic research and develop their talents. The current curatorial project of L.Christeseva aims to bring visibility to female artists and together share success. This initiative is supported by the Swedish institute Creative Force Program.
