Sisterhood

Sisterly relationships are at the heart of Ludmila Christeseva’s work.

Ludmila Christeseva reclaims discarded fashion toiles—prototypes from the fashion industry—as symbols to explore what sisterhood truly means. Is it defined solely by blood ties, or can it also be found in the care and solidarity shared with other women along life’s journey?

The Sisterhood collection is shaped by complex emotions of pain and misunderstanding between Christeseva, her mother, and her sister. Growing up in 1940s Belarus, Christeseva’s mother shared a single dress with her four sisters—taking turns wearing it to school or dances. This solitary garment became a powerful symbol of growing up amidst war and scarcity, embodying not only struggle, but also beauty, pride, and the enduring bonds of sisterhood.

The exhibition was successfully presented at the Diplomat Hotel in Stockholm in 2021, marking International Women’s Day on March 8. It honored the strength found in chosen sisterhood and celebrated the shared journey of women supporting women.
